umbilical lines
Size:
3.5 French single lumen if < 1.2 kg
5.0 French single lumen if > 1.2 kg
UAC Depth (cm):
(Wt. in kg x 3) + 9 + Cord Length
Shoulder to umbilicus x 1.2
X-ray:
High Line (Above diaphragm: T6-T10) - preferable! T7 is heaven.
Low line (at L3-L4) - if high line unsuccessful
UVC Depth (cm):
(UAC / 2) + 1 + Cord Length
Shoulder to umbilicus x 0.67
X-ray:
Just above diaphragm
Low Lying UVC Depth (cm):
If the line placement is for emergency access, advance the catheter 1 to 2 cm past the point of initial blood return in the catheter (usually 4 to 5 cm in a full term)
Intubation
ETT depth (in cm):
Wt. in kg + 6 (not very precise)
Preferably, identify the double black lines at the distal tip of the endotracheal tube; once the vocal folds are aligned in between the black lines, your tube is likely in the correct position (advanced, practice with Wt. + 6 until comfortable)
X-ray: 1 cm above the carina (around T2-T3)
